The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was founded in 1915 by historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History Month.”

ASALH is the nation’s oldest organization dedicated to the scholarly study of African American life, history, and culture.

The Savannah Yamacraw Branch of ASALH was founded by
W. W. Law in 1977. As a civil rights leader and preservationist, Law advocated for passive resistance, desegregation, architecture, peaceful integration, and the preservation of Black history in Savannah.
